Leaf spring RC suspension isn’t particularly known for flexibility to boot. This is understandable since material science laws with respect to elastic deformation don’t operate the same way at 1:10th scale. In fact, you wouldn’t be too far off to say that even the stiffest coil-over spring would probably offer more articulation and travel depth than the softest leaf spring. With that in mind, if a standard functional RC leaf spring with no more that three “leafs” is so stiff, how much articulation could you possibly expect from one with a more realistic leaf count, that number, in the case of these ‘RC4WD Super Scale Steel Leaf Springs’, being seven?
Would it be:
A) Some?
B) Hardly any?
C) None whatsoever?
If you answered ‘C’, congratulations! Yes, these shocks are shockingly stiff – so much so that they may very well have been cast into a single solid piece of metal (or chiseled from a rock, for all I care).
So, are they worth it?
CONS:
1) For what they are, the price is a bit too steep, especially given that this is just a pair and not a complete set of four.
2) Quality assurance is inconsistent. One in the pair looks good but the other one was put together a bit crooked in that the ends of the brackets on top that wrap the leafs together don’t meet too straight.
3) Were all the leafs painted as one after being bunched together or were they painted individually and then glued together? In either or neither case, the whole thing has a fused look to it from the sides. (Maybe I’m seeing things).
4) If you were planning on using these with U-bolts make sure you have your measurements dead on because there is a good chance these will be to thick to fit.
5) Did I mention ZERO flex? It looks like they would sooner either break apart completely or the topmost leaf would permanently bend out of shape at the ends if enough weight/pressure is applied.
PROS:
1) As the name of the product states, they do indeed offer far more scale realism in appearance than the standard functional leaf springs with sparse sheet counts.
CONCLUSION:
Take this product as a decorative accessory, rather than a functional component. (It would look good on a shelf queen). However, if you are at all serious about suspension, forget it. And oh, I don’t care if you use these in conjunction with the TeraFlex shackles; They probably won’t help you a lot if at all. 7 customers found this review helpful. View all reviews
