Traxxas’ Most Powerful Charger

THE CHARGER-
The dual port ID charger is a great little unit for the price. The ID technology definitely helps those new to the hobby or unfamiliar with battery technology safely charge their batteries. Even for experienced RC hobbiests it is great to be able to just plug the battery in and press a single button. As an example, with my Hitec chargers I have to ensure that all the charger settings are correct, connect the power and balance leads to bulky balance boards and then start charging. As a result, when I am racing with my family I do not let them use my Hitec chargers as it is far too easy to screw something up. But with ID charger you would actually have to try pretty hard to screw something up, so it gives me piece of mind when there are a bunch of people using my gear with very little experience.
THE BATTERIES
The Traxxas LiPos are only 25C and therefore have a fairly low discharge rate. While this doesn’t limit the fun you can have with the models, it does mean that if you are hard on the batteries they are more likely to “puff” than batteries with higher C ratings. I am fortunate enough to have an offroad track at a family member’s house and have observed drivers of all skill levels use and abuse their equipment. I have noticed a high correlation between lower skill level drivers and batteries puffing. My guess is large amount of throttle bursting newer drivers do is cause higher drain on the batteries and causing them to puff (all puffing we have seen was after use, not after charging.) I personally have not had any Traxxas LiPos puff, but almost all my other family members have. That being said Traxxas has fantastic customer service and warranty on its batteries. Within the first year of purchase they will swap the battery out at no charge (hang on to your receipt) and beyond that they will replace the battery at a 50% discount.
Unfortunately there are no higher quality batteries that are ID compatible. If you like the pros of the charger and ID system you have to take the cons of the batteries. I would probably rate this 4* if Traxxas customer support was not do fantastic. For me, the trade off is worth it. I love the ease of use ID system and the 7600mAh batteries give you tons of run time. When I race at my local RC raceway I run my TLR models with higher quality batteries and use my Hitec charger, but for bashing and family racing, Slash 4×4 and ID batteries/chargers are all I use.
