A small spring on the bottom the pull the shaft back into itself limiting the travel. Switching the the sprung style uses 1 long spring to push the shaft out of the body giving you long travel from the shock but a looser feel. Filled with 40 weight oil and I’m happy with the outcome. The truck stands slightly higher now as these shocks offer more travel. 4 customers found this review helpful. Rich Homan Verified Owner Monday, Jun 24 2019 (about 6 years ago) Yeah Racing Aluminum Desert Lizard Two Stage Internal Spring Shocks (Red) (2) I ran these for 3+ hours straight on the trails, crawling, water crossing, trail running. They held most of their oil for the entire time. Only 1 of the 4 shocks has some air noise in it, but I can safely say i would run these again without re-filling the oil or replacing the seals and feel that they would work just fine.
I did modify them a bit, i drilled 2 of the holes in the pistons to 1.8mm to increase the flow of oil a bit better. The dampening in them stock is very high, i almost considered running them with just enough oil to lube the insides up because it was so stiff. But after drilling the pistons and putting in 20wt oil with the soft spring droop setup these worked awesome. They absorb small bumps and allow for a massive amount of articulation all the while keeping the tires on the ground where they belong.
If you are like me and think that shock companies should be producing shocks that can actually handle being run for hours on end without losing all of their oil, then these will satisfy you. I would give them a 5 star rating but out of the box they are very stiff and took a little bit of work to get them to be usable in my eyes. Overall i am very happy with them and i feel like they have out preformed the other 2 brands of shocks i have tried by leaps and bounds. When i am in the market for more shocks i will certainly buys these again. 3 customers found this review helpful. I got these for my TRX-4 after the stock shocks eventually ran out of oil and wore down, so I got these and boy are they good!
These take a decent amount of tuning for your application, but I used 30wt oil and a midrange spring (no droop) for my TRX-4, but YMMV.
Once they’re installed and tuned, they’re awesome! No leaks, no issues, just smooth shock absorption. I’m not a huge fan of the ball ends that came with them, but it’s a small complaint. They compress just as small as the stock shocks, but they extend almost 3-4mm longer, which is always a bonus. 1 customer found this review helpful. Internal springs keep them clean and easy. They seal well and don’t leak much at all. I recommend getting m3 standoffs in case there is clearance issues, The shock bodies are pretty thick. But the droop setup is a life saver, It “catches” my 11 pound trx4 well and prevents 90% of rollovers. Really can’t beat this shock at this price. Plenty of adjustment and good performance. 10w is where it’s at! I have fished around through other brands and most leak or the springs just arent enough to hold up to my monster truck rig.
These shocks i would recommend beings they come with so many sets of springs all with different ratings. So far i havent test run the Monster Truck RC with them … but when i do i will fill in more review for the outcome of hold up. I was going to go the lightest spring rates but went a step up and got to more to test for stiffness. So i will follow up later on review when all my tests are done.
So far i am pleased and can tell these are worth the shot and playing with. 4****’s for now … when im done testing and see how things go & if all fine i will 5*****’s
